Peewee Minors Win Freedom Cup!

2011-01-17

Fire '99's feel liberated after winning Freedom Cup!!

The Fire '99's went the distance over MLK weekend and won the Freedom Cup on home ice...

After going 2 and 1 in round robin play with wins over  the Bulls and Jacksonville and a loss to the Golden Wolves, the Fire found themselves in a highly anticipated semi-final against the local Ice Bandits. The game was hotly contested from the opening face off.  In an exciting finish to regulation time, the Fire came back from a 3-1 deficit to tie the game at three with 1:46 to go in the 3rd period.  The two squads then battled it out in a six minute sudden death overtime which ended with neither side scoring. The scoreless OT forced a five player shoot out.

Three of the first four Fire shooters scored while at the other end the Fire netminder was busy stoning all four Bandit shooters that faced him. The shootout win launched the team into the Monday morning championship game.  After such an intense game the day before against the Ice Bandits, and with the team running the gamut from regulation time to overtime to a shootout format, all in one afternoon, the inherent danger was the squad could come out flat against the Carolina Storm in the championship game.

However this was not the case. The boys were ready to play from the opening face-off, scoring two goals to open the first period. They scored another in the third to jump out to a 3-0 lead in the 2nd. The Storm raged stronger than ever in the third period, as they tried to stage a last ditch comeback by scoring two consecutive goals to close the gap, 3-2. With just over 6 and a half minutes to play the Fire added the insurance they needed to skate away with the win in a 4-2 final and hoist the Freedom Cup Championship banner among them.
